Hopefully you've found your venue and have decided on a theme. If not, visit my previous posts for help: Tips for Finding a Venue and How to Pick the Perfect Wedding Theme. Now is the time to focus all of your ideas for decorating your space(s).
1. Visit Your Venue(s)
If you haven't done so already, visit your venue(s) if you're able to. If you can't (such as for a destination wedding), try to get your venue to send you a floor layout or look at photos of weddings they've done online. Before you can begin to play around with table placements etc., you need to know the space you're working with.
2. Draw Out the Floor Plans
This is optional, but I highly recommend it. Drawing out the floor plans or printing them allows you to experiment with the layout of your wedding. It's much easier than guessing what will work and what won't. It's best if you draw them out in marker so that you don't have to redraw it if you erase the placement of things later.
2. Draw Out Ideas for Decorations and Placement
Label where you want to put the head, gifts, and cake tables. Where do you want the band? Have a photobooth? Where are you putting it? Draw it all out. I recommend doing this in pencil so you can go back and edit if you need to. Have extra pages with sketches of how you want your centerpieces or other detailed pieces to look. And no, ladies, you do not have to be an artist. If it makes sense to you, you're in good shape!
4. Get the Opinion of Your Vendor
Take your ideas to the people at your venue. They may have suggestions of what layout will work best and can provide you with ideas you might not have thought of. If something won't work, they'll be able to tell you. Please don't do this so close to your wedding that you have your heart set on a layout only to find it won't work. This will cause unnecessary stress! Do this well in advance. Go multiple times if need be.
